WordPress Tutorials – How to Install a Plugin
As the world's most popular open-source content management system for blogging, WordPress has hundreds of plugins available for it. These plugins are designed by some of the many enthusiasts of WordPress and they enhance its functionality in a wide variety of ways. For example, there are plugins for adding new features to your WordPress site, improving certain aspects of it and much more. There are plugins for advertising, providing readership statistics, improving security, backup and much more. Plugins allow you to easily add the desired functionality to your WordPress site without having to know anything about programming or Web design. You can install as many plugins as you like for your WordPress site. They are all available for free and are accessible either from within your WordPress dashboard or from the official WordPress plugins directory.
Option 1 – Installing Plugins within WordPress
By far the easiest and quickest way to install WordPress plugins is by doing so using the built-in functionality in the WordPress dashboard itself. If you already know the name of the plugin you wish to install, this is the recommended method to use. If, however, you want to browse through the entire plugin directory, it is best to do so at the official WordPress Plugin Directory.
Log into your WordPress dashboard and click “Plugins” in the sidebar. Click “Add New” close to the top of the page. Enter the name for the plugin you want to install in the search box and click “Search Plugins.” Alternatively, you can browse through the thousands of available plugins by using the list of popular tags.
Click “Install Now” beside the plugin you want to install. This may take a few minutes. When the plugin has been installed, click “Activate Now” and you will be able to begin using the plugin.
Option 2 – Installing Plugins from the WordPress Plugin Directory
Go to the WordPress Plugins Directory at wordpress.org and browse through the list of available plugins by clicking on relevant tags in the sidebar. You can also search for plugins using the “Search Plugins” box in the sidebar. When you find the plugin you want, click on its name to go to the page for that plugin. Click the “Installation” tab to see the installation instructions.
If you wish to manually download and install the plugin, click on the download link provided. You will then need to manually upload the contents of the downloaded archive into its own subfolder in the “wp-content/plugins/” directory of your site. Further instructions should be provided at the plugin homepage.
